Z opens site with on-the-go EV charging for large vehicles

New Zealand’s largest transport energy company has opened an EV charging site with a new design offering large commercial vehicles and customers with trailers an on-the-go charging solution in Auckland.
Z Energy (Z) now has 180kW ultra-fast charging capabilities at Z Wiri Station Road. Through co-funding with Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority, two large charging bays have opened, offering trucks, other large EVs or those with trailers the opportunity to charge on-the-go.
“Z Wiri Station Road is in an industrial area in South Auckland, and many of our customers at this site drive large or heavy vehicles. As we think about their shift to EVs, we must ensure public charging infrastructure is available to them,” says Z’s Head of EV Charging Kieran Turner.
Businesses are looking at ways to transition their vehicle fleet to reduce their emissions and EVs will play a role in this. Z recognises most EV charging will be done at home or in the workplace, however there is still a need for public chargers, including for larger vehicles, to offer a cost-effective, rapid, on-the-go solution.
Z is working to expand its EV charging network. The company currently has just over 100 light vehicle charging bays across select retail sites. All Z EV chargers are fast or ultra-fast chargers, ranging from 50 to 200 kilowatts.
“Z is well-placed to continue to support EV drivers as it rolls out an on-the-go charging network. Our well-established retail service station network across Aotearoa offers food, coffee and other onsite amenities, making Z a great place for our customers to stop while they charge or refuel, particularly along major travel corridors.
"While our focus remains on progressing with our EV network to see an increase in light vehicle charging bays across Z retail sites, we look forward to hearing feedback from our customers on these larger bays as we think about next steps in our growing EV charging network,” says Kieran.
